Discover Geelong
Come and visit Victoria's second largest city, Geelong. It is situated on Corio Bay, on the gateway to the well-known Great Ocean Road, which starts just south of Geelong at Torquay, and within a short drive from the popular beach-front communities on the Bellarine Peninsula.
The city of Geelong itself asserts a big commercial centre which spreads down to the shore, giving visitors the option to discover more popular beach-front attractions such as the Steampacket Gardens, Eastern Beach with its swimming enclosure, the dining selections accessible on Cunningham Pier, and numerous coastal walks, sprinkled with gatherings of bollards, portraying historic characters. Stylish architecture, colourful parks and gardens, and the background of Corio Bay, are all representative of what locals refer to as the "city by the bay".
Locations of interest for visitors include the Old Geelong Gaol, the National Wool Museum, the Botanic Gardens at Eastern Park, and a number of other museums, galleries and historical buildings.

The Barwon River roams through Geelong and its nearby suburbs, faced by the scenic Buckley Falls in Fyansford and a number of attractive parks. On its passage to the coast, the river flows through the wetlands of Lake Connewarre before arriving in Bass Strait at the twin towns of Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads.

The name of Geelong came from the local Wathaurong Aboriginal word for the region of Jillong, thought to depict "cliffs" or "land". In 1838, the area was first surveyed, which was three weeks after Melbourne. The second post office to open in the Port Phillip District was Geelong, by June 1840.

Also constructed in this period was the first wool store, and it became the port for the Western District’s wool industry. As a key port to the rich goldfields of the Ballarat district, Geelong experienced a brief boom during the gold rush. The city then expanded into manufacturing, and during the 1860s, with its wool mills, paper mills and rope works, it became one of the largest manufacturing centres in Australia.

It was declared a city in 1910, and became established as a manufacturing centre for the state, with industrial development until the 1960s. The population grew to more than 100,000 by the mid-1960s. Increases in population over the last ten years were due to the development in service industries as the manufacturing sector declined.

Geelong has been renowned for being home to the Geelong Football Club, also known as ‘The Cats’, and the car manufacturer Ford Australia.
